Bromley Youngster's Oscar Dream

9 February 2007

A young Bromley student has won the rights to have her first film made. 15 year old old Amii Griffith from Ravensbourne School in Bromley beat off strong competition to win the award with 'Those Few Minutes', a film looking at the world of instant celebrities made by TV. Amii's short film shows how a young woman copes with fame and its darker side after winning a reality television show. Her film will now be sponsored into full development with a professional script, actors and music and is expected to be premiered at a Film London event in the summer.

Amii said, "I'm absolutely thrilled. I never expected to win , but I'm really looking forward to seeing my ideas take shape. I'm fascinated by the effects I think reality TV has on its instant celebrities. I wanted to explore the tensions in their lives as they become changed through forces they can't control and become unwitting victims of the media."

Bromley Mytime, the charitable leisure trust, encouraged local young people to enter the Tripod Film Awards run by  Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich in partnership with Film London. The final round of the Tripod Film Fund closed last week and two films have been chosen from the nine short listed scripts to go forward for completion. It was decided to make two awards due to the very high quality of submissions and also the diversity of applicants' experience and backgrounds. The awards were made following an intensive programme of workshops and tutorials on script development.

Amii's award is for personal development aimed at first time filmmakers who (in the opinion of the panel) showed unusual potential and it was felt would benefit from further mentoring as well as funding towards production.

We are delighted that a Bromley resident was so successful especially as the standard was so high. Of the nine finalists, three were from Bromley.

Tripod Film Fund is a joint initiative funded partly through Film London and is a partnership between Bexley and Greenwich Councils with Bromley Mytime. The second round of the Challenge Film Fund is expected to be announced by Film London later in 2007.
