A free lifestyle and exercise programme for overweight and obese children aged 7 - 13 years.
The MEND programme is a lifestyle and exercise programme designed especially for overweight and obese children aged 7 - 13 years, and is run by Bromley Mytime at sites across the borough in partnership with Bromley Primary Care Trust.
The programme is designed to provide children and their families with support and further education around nutrition, healthy eating and physical activity. There is also a MIND aspect to the course, which helps build confidence, self discipline, and self esteem.
The programme is FREE to participants and their families as it is funded jointly by the Big Lottery, Bromley Mytime and Bromley Primary Care Trust.
Each course consists of eighteen sessions run over nine weeks. The sessions run twice a week for two hours each. Courses run every term at selected sites acorss the borough.
Each two hour session consists of a one hour interactive knowledge session followed by a one hour exercise session. The exercise session takes place in the sports hall and swimming pool. This component of MEND has been created by Bromley Mytime based on our own successful myboost programme, and is used all over the country.
The programme consists of lots of fun and games, discussions and exercise activites to improve health levels, build confidence, self esteem and impart knowledge of good diet and nutrition.
Part of MEND's success is due to the fact that it is compulsory that a parent or carer attends the knowledge sessions with their child to support development, and reinforce a lifestyle change in the home. Click here to read the case study of a recent MEND star.
The majority of participants on the courses are referred by partners including schools, children's projects, dieticians, school nurses, and are open to all residents or children who go to school in the borough.
Places can be booked on a MEND course by calling: 020 8323 1719
This number is also a general MEND enquiry line where teachers or those working with children can call to obtain flyers and promotional material to circulate to pupils or, to discuss other methods that can be used to approach children and their families about this issue.
