Mytime Backs Leisure Hopefuls

31 January 2007

Basketball news story

Local charity, Bromley Mytime, is helping young school leavers to start a career in leisure thanks to a unique partnership with Orpington and London Leisure colleges.

Fourteen local young students have joined the two year "F.C. Leisure" course which provides an introduction to working in the leisure industry including customer care, fitness instructor, life-guarding, first aid and sports leadership. Students are also offered sessional and placement work in sports centres or outreach enabling them to gain valuable experience.

Backing the scheme, Bob Neill, M.P. for Bromley and Chislehurst said, "It's wonderful to see Bromley's young school leavers showing such a commitment to developing their own careers in leisure. I expect demand for leisure to continue to grow as more people discover the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle."

Dennis Barkway, C.B.E., Chairman of Bromley Mytime, said, "Leisure is a people business but all too often new recruits don't have the skills we need. I'm delighted that in working alongside Orpington and London Leisure Colleges we're much more likely to get the skills sets we need to run a successful customer-facing business."

The course started in September and the first students are expected to complete their first level qualifications next summer. Recruitment for this September's intake will commence in April 2007.
