Bromley Students Bring the Elements to the Streets!

19 June 2008

Earth Girl

Bromley Mytime, in partnership with Emergency Exit Arts and on behalf of the South London Arts Partnership, is proud to present the South London Street Arts Academy’s new touring street arts show ‘Elemental’. Devised and performed by young people, ‘Elemental’ encompasses a range of art forms...dance, drama, percussion, rap and carnival.

The show explores our relationships with the natural world through character, movement, sound and visuals, creating moments of intimacy and spectacle, improvisation and choreography. It will be performed in a variety of public places, bringing them to life in colourful, dynamic and unexpected ways.

Look out for Air, Fire, Water and Earth as they promenade throughout the day, performing to, and interacting with the public. Discover what happens when the elements combine and react together and join them as they process throughout the festival, heralding the power of the natural world.

Between May - July 2008 there will be 8 performances across South London, leading up to performances during the Cultural Oympiad.

Bromley Mytime has led on the development and management of South London Street Arts Academy which is being delivered and run by the established street and performance arts company Emergency Exit Arts. The project has involved 200 young people from across 8 South London boroughs who have taken part in a series of ‘street arts’ workshops in disciplines such as dance, drama, circus skills and costume-making at their school or youth centre, with a group of young people from across all the boroughs then coming together for an intensive residency in central London which took place over the Easter holiday. In Bromley, students from Charles Darwin School have been involved in the project. The school hosted the initial workshops and students have then gone on to take part in the residency, and are a part of the group who have devised the new show. ‘Elemental’ will receive its first performance in Sutton High Street this Saturday lunchtime! Subsequent performances will include an appearance at the Bromley Arts Festival on 12 July in the high street in the afternoon – so please do come and support the group and our Bromley students as they have all worked really hard on this very exciting project.

Bromley Mytime is grateful for the support of London Councils and Arts Council England towards the South London Street Arts Academy
