Junior badminton players from Langley Park Sports Centre are reaping the rewards of weekly quality coaching as demonstrated in their success at the Kent Junior Badminton Tournament held at the end of October. Badminton coach Debbie Baker said, “The team have shown their potential as young talented juniors who play badminton in the right spirit. I encouraged the juniors I coach to enter as part of their learning and to enjoy competing”
Amongst the successes were gold medalists George and Huon who demonstrated excellent team work and support of each other in their victory in the U11 boys’ doubles event. George has subsequently been asked to play in the Kent Junior Squad U12 age group which is a fantastic achievement. Langley Park Sports Centre player George Butler, aged 10 from Beckenham, said, “I started playing badminton when I was 7. It keeps me active and I have made lots of friends. Since playing at the Kent tournament I have been asked to train with the Kent Under 12 Junior Squad. My ambition is to eventually play for Kent and get a high ranking”.
On the back of this tournament Stephanie Brett has gone on to win two gold medals at the Tunbridge Wells Junior tournament showing she has a real taste for success. Junior badminton courses are offered at Langley Park Sports Centre during term-time. There are also a number of junior badminton tournaments held in Kent for non-county players, aimed at encouraging more young people to play the sport.
