Visual Arts

The Arts Team has a particular focus on developing the visual arts in the borough. The Borough has very little exhibition space and no space dedicated to showing contemporary art. There are also currently no artists studios in the Borough despite the fact that many professional artists live locally. In order to improve access to the visual arts the Arts Team has worked in partnership with funding agencies and other organisations to deliver visual arts projects and develop the local infrastructure.

Crystal Palace Artists Programme

Working in partnership with the London Borough of Croydon and funded by the Crystal Palace Partnership and Arts Council London, the Arts Team worked over two years to offer artists living in the Crystal Palace area training and capacity building. The programme ended in March 2004 but the networking group CPArtists still meet regularly and run the annual Signal Exhibition. Link (external link)www.cpartists.com

Six Thousand Chairs

Bromley Mytime worked in association with local artist Carlos Cortes and freelance curator Ben Eastop to mount a live art and installation event over three days in Crystal Palace Park summer 2004. The project brought together local, regional and national artists and showcased an eclectic range of performance, sound and installation pieces. The project was funded by Arts Council England.

Exhibition Space

The arts team are currently examining the feasibility of converting an underused space in one of the Bromley Mytime facilities into a gallery.

Art in the Public Realm

Members of the arts team advised the Council on commissioning artists Wolfgang and Heron to create twelve spherical bollards for the forecourt at Bromley South Station. The team are currently working with Blenheim Infants School and the Bromley Children’s Project to create a sensory garden for reception class children with a public artist.
